Book Review: Follow Your Heart by Andrew Matthews

I am so excited to write this Book Review.  Follow Your Heart by Andrew Matthews is just a fantastic read.  It is inspiring, easy to read, insightful, and witty.  It is one of those books you can keep on your bookshelf and go back to whenever you need a bit of inspiration.  I made over 25 highlights in this book (which is quite a lot for me).  Follow Your Heart touches on every aspect of life and provides a great way to look at life that could really improve your attitude.  He quotes and references several other expert sources one of which is A Course in Miracles.  I find that this really put validity into his message.  I am reading A Course in Miracles and plan on blogging about it extensively in the future. Here are some quotes from Andrew's book and why I love them:
"My life is a series of lessons I need, happening in perfect order."  Doesn't everyone want their life to have meaning? To make a difference? Have an impact?  But life is messy with lots of pitfalls, mistakes, roadblocks, and difficulties.  Looking at your life as a series of lessons really puts the messiness of life into a prospective where everything that happens needs to happen to create the perfect being that is you.  Do you think no one is perfect? Everyone is flawed? Maybe you need to re-define perfect.  We are all living the life we are meant to be living and everything that happens along the way happens to mold you into who you are meant to be.  As we go down our individual paths of life we should find happiness learning life's lessons and becoming better and better people.

"If nothing good is happening in your life, it's your fault.  Once you acknowledge that you input shapes your circumstances, you cease to be a victim."  This is one of those life lessons that people need to learn.  It is difficult and something I continue to remind myself everyday, but really taking responsibility for everything in your life is empowering.  Yes, this means that everything bad that happens is your fault, but it also means that you have the power to change  your life, cause good things to happen and remove the bad from your life.

"Most of us would rather be right then happy."  This is a sad but very true fact of life.  Having to get the last word, win the argument,  getting our way, it all is about being right rather than being happy.  Maybe if we were to listen a bit more and take more of an effort to understand each other, happiness could win out over being right.

"As we express gratitude for what we have, so we feel richer, and so more comes out way."  This is the law of attraction.  The more grateful we feel for what is in our life, the more things come into our life to feel grateful for.  The more love we send out, the more love we get out.  The more joy we feel, the more joyfulness comes in.

"When you only give fifty percent effort, you suffer much more than your boss.  He only loses a few dollars.  You lose enthusiasm and your self-esteem, and a whole chunk of your life."  I grew up with a great work ethic, so I love this statement.  When you work, you should be working for your benefit as as well as the companies and consumer; but mostly you should be working for you.  You should get satisfaction from doing your job, after all, that is where you spend most of your time.

"When you are passionate, no one else has to motivate you."  This is my favorite line from the book.  I've always thought of myself as passionate and thought that being passionate about things deepens your experience.  I've never linked it to motivation before, but it makes sense.  When I'm passionate about something, motivation is never an issue, I dive in with enthusiasm.

Follow Your Heart by Andrew Matthews is a great book.  Read it!
